Make A Note Monday: I need some cheer

I have had a busy couple of weeks and recently ran across this spoken word done by Samuel L. Jackson on one of the best 90’s shows: Boy Meets World!! I need a bit of cheer so I decided to share this with you all because when I first saw this I was snapping in my living room and shouting and laughing and just having a good time!! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. If you are a fan of the show you should definitely love it because it sums up the series so well!!

I’m A Pretty Brown Girl

My eyes are dark like tootsie rolls, my hair crinkles when wet, my face is a shade of brown I haven’t figured out just yet.

My lips are full, my smile is big, I don’t have many curves I’m shaped kinda like a twig.

I love to read and write

I love fashion and dreaming

I love windy days and star-gazing.

I have many layers to who I am and discovering them is better than any life plan. My husband would agree that I am better when I am naturally; just me.

I am a lover of people, a giver of myself, a child of God, a friend to all a wife to one.

But before all of this I was and still am a pretty brown girl.

A woman in a bright red dress with multi-colored flowers on it!
I'm A Pretty Brown Girl!!!

I wrote this original poem specifically for today to celebrate the first National Pretty Brown Girl Day!!! and maybe next year I’ll be able to celebrate with some friends!!! If you are interested in learning more about the pretty brown girl movement go here to check it out and see what you can do!!!

The haze has been lifted…

Okay so this weekend was a really awesome time of creativity. I did just about everything but dance… I hope you enjoy what I’ve created as much as I enjoyed making them.

These are the bows I hand made with my friend Sally's help
A painting I made for my friend
just a random picture I painted

I also wrote a little something…

I Want The World To Know

I want the world to know that you live.

I want the world to look at my life and see you.

I want the world to know that you died for them

and that you sent me to tell them about your love.

I want the world to know that your love for them is

an everlasting love that will never fade away

like our love sometimes does.

I want the world to know that you knew and created

them even before they were born and that you dont

make mistakes.

I want the world to know that you see everything

and that you are always there.

I want the world to know that just like you live in me

you can live in them.

I want the world to know that you live!

I also tinkered around on my violin and even recorded it so if you are near and would like to hear it let me know. It was pretty relaxing to let the haze lift spend some time with Jesus and create a few things. I highly recommend it to everyone!

My flesh had to die

They walked in for refreshing but all I felt was jealousy.

They came to seek the Lord yet all I could do was think, I’m not the only one anymore.

How could they know that their very presence would enact in me so many insecurities.

They couldn’t. They shouldn’t.

My flesh had to die.

In that moment it had to die because

Jealousy is the #1 killer of all women to women relationships.

There was 7 of them all women of color,

all beautiful, all different yet the same

because they came in seeking a common goal and they loved the Lord!

So why is it that my flesh rose up so high;

because the devil is a lie.

For so long I yearned to have people near me that looked similar to me;

that were at least a close shade of mahogany like me…

and in they walk.

My flesh had to die.

They were all different shades of the brown color scheme

and they were beautiful unlike any others I had ever seen.

My flesh had to die,

and as soon as it did I began to see that there

were actually 8 beautiful women of color and one of them was me,

all shades of the brown color scheme,

some with hair like mine and some not, but we are all sisters pursuing the same goal:

love Jesus and seek after God.

My flesh had to die and this is me repenting…

Father God please forgive me for I have sinned against my sisters I allowed my flesh to rise up. Thank you for killing my flesh before it grew out of control. Help me to continue to die to my flesh when it comes up again and again because it will. In Jesus’ Name Amen.
