Words From A Wife: Multitasking By Sheila Wray Gregoire

Okay so in my many blog subscriptions that I receive… I read this wonderful insightful blog and absolutely had to share!!! It’s just what I needed to hear and I know that It will ultimately help me in becoming a more excellent wife. After all this is my job of choice right now and I want to be the best that I can be. So grab a pen and paper and prepare to take notes…

This blog post is entitled The Multitasking Wife and it is by Sheila Wray Gregoire. I read it from Amy Bayliss’ blog…

One of the curses of being a multitasking woman is that it’s hard to slow down and concentrate on one thing at one time. When I’m talking on the phone, I have to fold laundry. When I’m standing in line at the bank, I have to clean out my purse. And unfortunately, too often, when my husband and I are being *ahem* intimate, I prepare grocery lists.

Multitasking

It’s not that I mean to. I could be having a great old time when that thought will suddenly pop into my head—“is there milk in the fridge for breakfast?”—and then I’m gone. I am female. And that makes me utterly and completely distractible.

It’s because of this little quirk of female behavior that our approaches to sex are so different from our husbands’. While men tend to be excited right away, we have to warm up to it, because for women, desire is all in our heads. When our heads aren’t in the game, our bodies don’t follow.

So getting our heads in the game, and fighting against that multitasking tendency, is so important if we’re going to really enjoy our marriages. But it can be hard to bring our minds back to the matter at hand if we have the idea that sex is somehow—well—wrong. We suspect that God created it because He figured, “they have to reproduce somehow, and this is the best idea I’ve got.” And so we figure it was God’s concession to us, not something that’s beautiful.

It’s easy to see why we begin to believe this about sex, because our culture has so perverted it. When you take sex out of the marriage context, then sex becomes only about the physical. It’s not about a deep emotional or spiritual commitment; it’s only about pleasure. And that seems so shallow!

Even if we’re married, we can still have that idea about sex. And so instead of being able to be present in the moment, and feel that deep connection, we wander. We make do. We try to get it over with. Or maybe we even really enjoy it, but then we feel dirty afterwards.

God doesn’t want us to do any of those things. If you grew up with the King James Version of the Bible, do you remember sitting in church and snickering with your friends when the preacher read from Genesis, “And Adam knew his wife Eve, and they conceived unto them a son…” Yeah, right. Adam KNEW Eve. We thought it was a euphemism, like God was embarrassed and just trying to be polite.

But what if there was something far more fundamental going on there? In the Psalms, David uses the same Hebrew word when he cries out, “search me and KNOW me, O God…”

Sex is supposed to be a deep knowing, an intimate, beautiful experience. It’s not something we need to feel guilty about, or ashamed about. It’s not just physical, either. It’s about connection. When we make love, we become completely vulnerable. Completely transparent. And completely one. That’s the beauty that God created.

I know sometimes that’s hard to experience. We may “have sex”, but we find it difficult to “make love”, to experience that connection. That can be difficult if we’ve grown up with the idea that sex is somehow wrong, or if we’ve had bad experiences in the past, or if it just plain has never felt very good, and we’ve given up hope. But I believe that sex is God’s beautiful promise to us that we can experience a deep spiritual connection to someone here on this earth. It is supposed to be beautiful.

So next time you sense your mind wandering, bring it back. Find joy with your husband in that moment. Repeat to yourself (and even say out loud) why you love him. Feel him and embrace him and experience him. Don’t run away from the vulnerability; run towards it. And you may just start to sense what Eve did when she truly knew Adam.

Sheila’s new book, The Good Girl’s Guide to Great Sex, looks at the three aspects of sex: the physical, the emotional, and the spiritual, and explores how we can experience each one to the fullest! She blogs everyday at To Love, Honor and Vacuum.

My God Given Dream

Today in a Bible study I was asked a question that I’ve never had an answer to up until just recently… It asked us about our God-given dream. What it was and how people reacted to it… Like I said I haven’t had an answer. I’ve always been searching for what God has wanted me to do. But it has come to my attention that the dream that I have is in fact given to me by God and it’s okay to have even though it goes against everything that I’ve ever known.

My God-given dream is to be a wife and a mother. Sure it seems simple and maybe insignificant to many but when I stop and think about it. I realize that this is something that I’ve wanted for a very long time. I always wanted to be a wife… maybe because no one in my family was actually anyone’s wife, and it was something different that I could do.

Plus I absolutely loved how my mom was always there. She helped us with our homework, showed up at all of our readers theater plays, sports events– she was there yelling our nicknames and everything. She always supported us and showed up to take pictures and cheer for us when we won an award. I want to give that to my children.

Ever since I was little I always said that I wanted to be married before I started having kids. I wanted to be someone’s wife, I wanted to have a life partner, one that would never leave me, one that could support me and the family that we built. I knew that it was a different path than most of my family but I saw how they lived and honestly just didn’t want to have to struggle. I wanted to be able to depend on my husband and now I get to.

So on the wake of me not getting that really awesome administrative position for the event planner I wanted I realize that regardless of what I want, me being a wife is my God-given dream and that’s where I need to focus my energy. He has taught me that it can in fact be fun to do the wifely duties that He has allowed me to experience recently. And maybe one day I’ll be able to move on but for now my place is in the home getting things in order so that when my babies come I’ll be prepared, and I couldn’t be more excited and happy! I finally know where God wants me to be. I’ve been looking for a long time and it’s eluded me until now…and I just want to be an excellent wife and mother.

What’s your God-given dream??

Easter Weekend Recap

This weekend was definitely one unlike any other. For starters this was out first Easter in Miami…. As a church we decided to have a public Good Friday service where we invited the neighboring community! People actually came, some even with the flyer we had made in their hand!!! It was definitely a fantastic experience… History was made and I’m glad to have been apart of it.

We also hosted an Easter egg hunt for the local community and everyone who came truly enjoyed it… There was activities, a bounce house, plenty of eggs and many conversations about our vision for the church!!!

During Easter Sunday I had the wonderful opportunity to be in the children’s church. After service William and I along with our new friend Johnathan had a picnic which was a new experience but so worth it!! Here are some pictures from our weekend…

How did you spend your Easter weekend?

Prayers Welcomed…

a flyer that has a blood splatter and a cross for Good Friday

Please join us in praying for this service!!

So I need some people who can come together in agreement with me and thank the Lord for two things!!! The first thing is our (Bridge Church) Good Friday service that will be held tomorrow at 7pm… This will be our first public meeting and we are so excited and ready!! Please give thanks to the Lord for all the people who will be in attendance and for all the lives that will surely be changed during this time! Thank Him for the miracles that will be done and the team that will be formed. It’s been a bumpy ride these past few months so we are thankful to have this opportunity to impact our city for Jesus!!

The second thing would be thanks for a second interview that I have today at about 5:30pm eastern standard time. Ever since I stopped working at the local grocery store I have been waiting on God to direct my path on what it is that He wants me to be doing while bettering myself as a wife. But plain and simple I WANT THIS JOB!! I want this job even more than I wanted the National Parks job back in September… because it’s everything I like to do and I know that I can do…

It’s an administrative assistant job where I would keep a calendar and update social media; did I mention that it’s for an event planner… HELLOOOOOO!!! yeah I know…  HOWEVER even though I WANT THIS JOB, I WANT WHAT GOD WANTS FOR ME MORE! And if that means I get to continue my stay at home wife job full-time then so be it because I love this job too!!! So if you could just give thanks to the Lord for allowing me to have such a wonderful opportunity to find a job that I know that I can do in a field that I equally enjoy that would be very much appreciated. Regardless of the outcome I want to thank Jesus for showing me that it is still possible to do what I fully enjoy without compromising and I simply need your help in giving thanks!!! And I’ll be sure to let you all know how both events turned out!

Words From A Wife: Meet Crystal

Ever since I became engaged this woman has been in my life really helping me to figure out what it means to be a wife. And more importantly keeping me in line and my feet on solid ground. I know for a fact that I wouldn’t be where I am today without her. She has definitely saved me from myself on more than one occasion all while loving me unconditionally!

She’s the kind of woman who has standards that far surpasses others and that’s what I love most about her because at the end of the day she hears from and listens to God for everything to include what it means to be a wife and how to do it better each day…

Meet Crystal…

A man his wife

Crystal and her husband have fought for their marriage and won!

She is my support system in every way and she is more than just a friend, she is my sister, my road trip buddy, she truly is a lifelong friend and I sincerely love her and I trust and respect her opinion on everything. Here is how she answered my questions…

How long have you been married? 17 years and 7 months
Were your or are your parents married? My parents were married for 19 years and then divorced… They remarried other individuals the same year – currently married for 16 years. What did you learn from your parents that you use in your own marriage? A lot of things that I don’t need to do…one thing my Mom taught me was to be a wife who loves her husband no matter what and to keep my focus on God…  What’s your secret to being married? Prayer… lots of prayer! When my spouse fails me and my expectations, I go to God and ask him to fill me up with his presence. I have also learned to stand firm, even when everything in me has wanted to run away. When you learn to quiet your inner voice and really let God lead you through hard times, you find the strength to stay in your marriage.

How do you learn to compromise as a wife? How do you and your spouse learn to compromise? I remember that the world isn’t all about me. I need my husband to do things for me and if I can’t ever give him what he needs, then chances are he won’t do the same for me. It is a necessity to compromise… I look at it as a lesson in humility. My husband keeps me humble and grounded… I do the same for him. Sometimes we don’t give into each others needs and wants. But that is when the Holy Spirit deals with us individually. When you are focused on God and determined to follow him, compromise is inevitable.

What was the best advice you’ve ever received? Love isn’t a feeling, it is a choice! Sometimes you feel great with your spouse and other times you can’t stand them, but in the end it is a choice. God’s love for your spouse is the only one that lasts and you had better tap into God for it. Oh and my hubby says that you need to teach your husband to put the toilet seat down…lol! What was your life like when you first got married? Terrible!!!!! We got married for the wrong reasons. We had a few good moments, but we were both very selfish and not wanting to include God in our marriage. So when we fought, it was like WWIII… it is a wonder that either of us made it through the first 7 years without losing body parts or our minds.

What makes you a wife? Being married to my husband makes me a wife, but Jesus makes me a bride to my husband.
Have you ever considered being a wife as a full-time occupation? Yes, in fact I was a stay at home wife and mother for many years. Whether you work outside the home or in the home, if you are married then the Lord has called it to be your #1 occupation on this Earth.  What are your expectations as a wife? To be a support and buffer for my husband. I ask the Lord frequently to make me the kind of wife HE needs me to be for my husband and not the type that I THINK I need to be for him.

Does societies portrayal of a wife line up with what you do? Probably not, but then again, most of what I do doesn’t line up with society. I am so glad that they don’t determine my worth! At the end of the day, I am accountable to God and my husband on how I am doing as a wife… NO ONE else! They are both great about telling me when I am missing the mark in a way that builds me up and doesn’t tear me down. Of course, I look for wisdom from others concerning marriage, but at the end of the day the final word rests with God and my husband.

Have you ever read any books on being a wife and if so what were they? Love and Respect is a great book. The Five Love Languages is another important one for us. I also read books to help me understand myself as a woman… The most important book, however, has been the Bible. The reason I am still a wife today is because of that book. I have learned humility, grace, love and truth from that book!

Crystal, Thanks for consistently being my support when I need it, for showing me what it means to be a wife and for being so willing to share with my readers. And  thank you readers for coming along for the ride. Until next time, blessings to you!
